Durham
Friends Meeting
For members
planning meeting related activities, or for potential outside users who are
considering
using the
Durham Friends Meeting (DFM) facilities for meetings or other events, the
following
paragraphs briefly
describe our facilities at our Alexander Avenue campus.
There are
three buildings at the Durham Friends Meeting campus all of which are handicap
accessible and
fully climate controlled. They are arranged in a “C” shape around a central
courtyard
and
playground.
The MEETINGHOUSE (2004) is the large two-story brick and
cedar shake-sided building at the rear
(west side) of
the campus.
WORSHIP ROOM. This 40x40 ft room is appropriate for large meetings and
music recitals. It
features
a wood floor, large windows and four symmetrical sloped ceilings leading up to
a
central
lantern skylight. It is furnished with cushioned chairs and can seat up to 150
people.
FELLOWSHIP HALL. This large multipurpose room is appropriate for events
involving food and
drink,
meetings requiring tables and chairs, or any activity (e.g., yoga or other
movement)
requiring
a large wooden floor space. It features large windows, a full kitchen and a
separate
nursery
area. It can accommodate over 100 people. Tables and chairs are available.
LIBRARY/FOYER. This semi-private space featuring a small table and chairs
is suitable for
informal
meetings of four or five people.
The ORIGINAL MEETINGHOUSE is the small older (1956) brick building
located closest to the street,
toward the front
(east side) of the campus. This climate controlled building features two 20x20
ft
carpeted and
furnished rooms with an adjoining kitchen facility and an accessible bathroom.
The EARLY SCHOOL CLASSROOM BUILDING is the cedar shake-sided building located
between the other
two buildings,
on the north side of the campus. It contains classrooms, equipment, and offices
appropriate
for school use for 3 to 5 year-old children. It is not normally available for
non-DFM
use.
The PLAYGROUND / COURTYARD area is centrally located between the
buildings described above.
Various native
plants and shrubs have been planted in small gardens. Walking paths of crushed
stone are
delineated by black borders and are usable by wheelchairs. Playground equipment
appropriate to
young children is also located in this area.
PARKING is available along Alexander Avenue in
front of the Meetinghouse and in three parking lots.
The small
parking lot on the north east corner of the property is for the use of Carolina
Friends
School, Monday
through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00 pm. However, the two handicap spots in this
parking lot
are available any time to those who need them. The parking lot located adjacent
to the
downhill
(south) side of the campus is available for facility users. The south (or left
as you enter)
side of this
lot is reserved for Ronald McDonald House and the north side for DFM facility
users.
There are 12
spaces available in this lot. The Duke University parking lots across the
street may be
used on
weekends and evenings and can accommodate up to 75 vehicles.
